RMBI Opens 21st Century Home
For over 40 years, Scarbrough Court in
Northumberland has been providing
Freemasons and their dependents with the
highest quality of care and support. Their
experience as a residential and nursing
home is exceptional, and now their
quality of service will be matched by the
unrivalled standards of their facilities.
In late summer 2008, care home charity
the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution
(RMBI) officially opened its doors to
newly built, luxury care home facility.
Based at Cramlington, the Home has
been awarded three stars for excellence
in care provision from the Commission
for Social Care Inspection (CSCI). It
will be one of the first care homes in the
UK to feature the latest green
technology and the highest standards in
health and safety, and has been built
using a range of renewable energy
technologies.
RMBI Property Director Andrew White
added: “We are leading the way in
sustainability in the UK. By tapping into
the natural resources underground, and
linking with a solar panel system, we are
able to provide the whole heating needs of
the care home using around one-tenth of
the gas we might otherwise require. The
system will help keep running costs down
and conserve vital energy resources.”
The Home has an increased capacity of
11%, catering for a total of 55 residents –
19 nursing and 36 residential. All
bedrooms have incorporated en-suite
showers, large windows and central
heating throughout.
Additional on-site amenities include a
roof garden, hairdresser and 24-hour
assistance.
RMBI welcomes all visitors to book a
tour of the new Home and meet the staff.

Trip of a Lifetime to Malta
The Royal Masonic Benevolent
Institution (RMBI) not only provides
residential care and support, but also
organises holidays for those receiving
masonic financial assistance. Holidays
are held in Eastbourne, Westcliff-on-Sea,
Bournemouth and Llandudno.
There is also a winter holiday to Malta for
a limited number of people, sponsored by
their Provinces and the RMBI. Betty Box,
who went to Malta earlier this year, said:
‘We appreciated having Maggie
Holloway, the RMBI Care Advice team
manager, with us for a few days, and
Denise Knight, our carer for the two
weeks, looked after us so well. The whole
holiday was full of laughter and masonic
friendship. Thank you all so much.’
Betty added: “There were six ladies
who were widows and we visited
Mdina, the ancient capital of Malta,
known as the silent city. We made
several visits to Valletta, a city steeped
in history with so many connections to
masonry. The Grand Masters of Malta
resided in the palace until 1798 when,
under British rule, it became the
Governor’s residence.
“It is now the seat of the Maltese
parliament, much of it open to the public,
and the corridors are lined with portraits
of the Grand Masters. We visited Valletta
Lodge, where Ted Wilbrew made us very
welcome. The lodge meets in a very old
building and we were shown the meeting
room and also a small museum of
masonic artefacts.”
