Book Review

Freemasonry. A Journey through Ritual and Symbol.

W. Kirk MacNulty. Thames & Hudson. £8.95.

Ah! Firmer ground. First published in 1991, this large-format, very well illustrated text of 96pp is to be recommended to initiates, often at a frightful loss to find a basic primer in the philosophy of the Craft. By no means exhaustive, MacNulty’s exposition is sure to set the diligent mind at work, as well as offering an easy-to-scan pictorial exhibition of Craft history. Good for masons and non-masons alike, MacNulty’s essential contribution is I think to see the three Craft degrees as related to the ancient tripartite division (really they merge into one another) of man as body (First Degree), psyche (soul or mind), and spirit (Third Degree), open to divine influence, a pattern he also glimpses in the layout of medieval cathedrals (Nave, Choir and Sanctuary). An enjoyable book to look at, refer back to - and study (especially before the Ceremony of Passing). Every lodge should have one.
